Protecting Howard Pond Together
Neighbors working to keep Howard Pond clear, safe, and wild.
A Brief History of HPPA
The Howard Pond Preservation Association grew from a simple idea: neighbors working together to care for a small mountain pond they loved. Early volunteers organized shoreline clean-ups, informal clarity readings, and loon counts; those efforts eventually became annual programs and a standing commitment to stewardship.
As interest grew, the group formalized procedures for water-quality monitoring, invasive plant patrols, and respectful-use education at the public launch. The Annual Meeting became a time to review clarity trends, hear from committees, and share practical guidance for boating, wakes near shore, and wildlife protection. Today, HPPA coordinates monitoring, safety, and habitat efforts across the seasons while keeping neighbors connected.
- Routine Secchi transparency readings and field notes archived year-to-year
- Volunteer plant patrols and rapid-response coordination for suspected invasives
- Loon-nest support and best-practices education for respectful viewing
- Quiet-water & launch etiquette reminders to protect shorelines and swimmers
