Safety on Howard Pond

Simple, neighborly guidelines for boating, swimming, fireworks, and winter ice.

Boating

Please observe all Maine state laws in addition to these local norms.

Courtesy Near Shore

  • Use slow-no-wake within ~200 ft of shore, docks, swimmers, or small craft.
  • Keep wakes small in coves and around loon nesting areas.
  • Operate only at safe speeds with a sober operator.

Life Jackets & Lights

  • Wear a USCG-approved PFD; strongly recommended for paddlers.
  • Carry lights for dawn/dusk or night operation.
  • Have a whistle or horn for signals.

Clean, Drain, Dry

  • Inspect hulls, trailers, anchors, ropes, and fishing gear.
  • Drain bilges, live wells, and ballast on land.
  • Let gear fully dry before visiting another waterbody.

Swimming

Visibility & Supervision

  • Swim with a buddy; supervise children closely.
  • Use a bright tow buoy if swimming outside a roped area.
  • Avoid alcohol when swimming.

Cold Water Awareness

  • Even in summer, deeper water is cold—watch for cramping.
  • Get warm and dry quickly after long swims.

Respect for Wildlife

  • Give loon families extra space; never approach or circle.
  • Keep noise low in quiet coves.

Fireworks

Check Local Rules

  • Comply with town and state regulations and any seasonal restrictions.
  • Be mindful of wildfire risk and wind direction.

Neighborly Quiet

  • Keep celebrations brief; avoid late hours.
  • Warn nearby neighbors when possible.

Loon & Pet Safety

  • Avoid launching near coves or nests—sudden blasts stress wildlife.
  • Clean up all debris; nothing should reach the water.

Ice & Winter

Variable Conditions

  • Ice thickness varies; early and late season ice is risky.
  • Avoid springs, inlets, and outlet channels.

Travel Prepared

  • Carry ice picks, throw rope, and a charged phone.
  • Go with a partner; keep distance between travelers.

After Immersion

  • Get out quickly, remove wet clothing, and rewarm gradually.
  • Call for medical help if shivering is severe or mentation changes.

Emergency & Contacts

In an Emergency

Dial 911

  • Provide your location (Hanover, Maine) and access point if known.
  • For wildlife distress (non-emergency), contact appropriate local authorities.
